Chevrolet Traverse

Model Overview

Chevrolet’s answer to the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Ford Explorer is the Traverse. Closely related to the Buick Enclave and the previous-generation GMC Acadia, the Chevrolet Traverse is the automaker’s family-oriented three-row crossover.

The Latest Generation

Before adding a large three-row crossover to its lineup, Chevrolet offered a number of minivans as its people mover offering. The very first of these minivans was the Chevrolet Lumina APV produced from 1990 to 1996, a quirky looking minivan with split A-pillars and a dramatically swept-back front end. The Lumina van was followed by the more conventional looking Venture produced from 1996 to 2005 and finally the Uplander, Chevrolet’s last minivan, produced from 2005 to 2008.

Introduced in 2009 as a 2010 model, the current-generation Chevrolet Traverse can be had with either a second row bench seat or two captain’s chairs depending on the trim level. A 3.6-liter V-6 mated to a six-speed automatic is the only powertrain combination available. The Traverse was refreshed for the 2013 model year and it received a new front fascia, updated rear styling, and an updated transmission calibration, . In a 2013 First Drive, we said that the Traverse’s transmission is quicker to shift and the updated suspension has improved its handling. The engine, however, needs revs to generate its power, which means it can labor at times.

A new generation of the Traverse is expected to arrive for the 2018 model year. Like the new Acadia, it should ride on a new platform that will reduce its overall weight and feature a new V-6 engine (and possibly GMs new nine-speed automatic transmission).
