Ford C-MAX Energi

Model Overview

The Ford C-Max Energi is a dedicated plug-in hybrid model that slots alongside the Ford C-Max Hybrid in the automaker’s lineup. The hatchback shares its drivetrain with the Ford Fusion Energi.

Like the standard C-Max Hybrid, the Ford C-Max Energi arrived for the 2013 model year. Power comes from a combination of a 2.0-liter Atkinson I-4 rated 141 hp and 129 lb-ft of toque, 118-hp electric motor, and an eCVT transmission. Total system output is rated 188 hp. The C-Max Energi has a 7.6 kWh battery compared to the 1.4 kWh battery in the C-Max Hybrid.

The plug-in hybrid model can travel up to 82 mph on electric power compared to just 62 mph for the standard hybrid model. The 2016 Ford C-Max Energi is EPA-rated at 88 mpge and has a 20-mile electric range when fully charged or 38/38/38 mpg city/highway/combined on gasoline alone. Total system range is rated 550 miles. In comparison, the C-Max Hybrid is EPA rated 41/36 mpg and has a 526-mile range (the 2017 C-Max Hybrid is rated 42/38 mpg). Initially, the C-Max Hybrid was rated 47/47/47 mpg, though it failed to achieve those numbers in third-party testing and was rerated.

Although we haven’t tested the C-Max Energi plug-in, we preferred the C-Max Hybrid over the Toyota Prius V in our comparison saying: “So, which is the better car? I’d say the C-Max, hands down. Which is why, when a friend with a 3-year-old called me recently asking for a hybrid recommendation, I advised him to get the Ford C-Max. It’s nicer, I explained. It’s faster, drives better, is quieter, and, despite the comparative lack of space, is an all-around more appealing package than the Toyota. Guess what? He didn’t care about any of that. All that mattered to him was fuel economy. So he bought the Prius V. Go figure.”

The Latest Generation

In addition to a new top-spec Titanium trim level for the 2017 Ford C-Max Energi, Ford has lowered the base price of the plug-in hybrid by $4,650. The base C-Max Energi starts at $27,995 before tax credits. The Titanium model features unique wheels, leather seats, and 10-way power passenger seat with lumbar. All models get subtlety revised styling including a smaller upper grille opening and revised headlights and taillights.
